Footnote can be used when you have additional information (a note) to the main text. A note character (such as a number or an asterisk) is added to the text. The note is then repeated below the main text, followed by the additional information (note text).
Footnotes can be used for source references, explanations or translations, but also to other notes and parenthetical posts, which are not so essential that the reader cannot depart from them without missing important information.
Do's and don'ts
- Don't overuse footnoes as they may interfere with reading and divert attention from the main message of the text
The footnote character has smaller font and is superscripted.
